Why I’m Starting Acton Academy Miami Beach: A Mother’s Leap of Faith
When I became a mom, something in me cracked wide open.
It wasn’t just the love (though that was overwhelming). It was this fierce, unshakable awareness: what I do now—what choices I make—shape the world my child will grow up in. And nowhere did that feel more urgent than when I started thinking about his education.
I watched my son with wonder—his curiosity, his questions, the way he lit up discovering something new. He learned through movement, joy, and repetition. He tested boundaries. He solved problems.
And the more I saw him grow, the more one thought haunted me: What happens to this spark when we put him in a traditional classroom?
I started to imagine him at a desk, told when to speak, what to memorize, when he could move, and how to sit still. I imagined worksheets instead of wonder. I imagined grades instead of growth. And my heart sank.
I realized that the very things that made him who he was—his energy, curiosity, wild ideas, and deep questions—could become problems in a system designed for compliance over creativity.
That was the moment I started looking for something different.
Discovering Acton
When I found Acton Academy, it felt like the clouds parted. Here was a model that didn’t just tolerate curiosity—it honored it. A place where children aren’t told what to think, but taught how to learn. A place that trusts kids to take ownership of their education, solve real problems, and discover their own path.
Acton learners set goals. They collaborate. They fail, reflect, and try again. They explore passions. They build businesses. They mentor younger students. They grow into people who not only know things—but know themselves.
And it hit me: this isn’t just the education I want for my son.
It’s the education I wish every child had access to.
Building Something New in Miami Beach
That’s why I’m launching Acton Academy Miami Beach—a nonprofit microschool where learners grow through freedom, purpose, and responsibility. It won’t look like a traditional school, because it isn’t. It’s a studio, not a classroom. A journey, not a syllabus.
And it all started with one small boy, chasing butterflies and asking why?
If you believe children deserve more than desks and tests—if you want to help us build something joyful, meaningful, and real—I hope you’ll follow our journey. Or better yet, walk with us.
Let’s reimagine education—together.
