What If We Rethought School Entirely?
“Children are far more capable than we give them credit for. They don’t need to be micromanaged. They need to be trusted.”
As the founder of Acton Academy Miami Beach, I spend a lot of time thinking—and talking—about what school could be. I’ve followed education policy and school choice for years, and I've seen just how hard it is to change the traditional system from within. But I’ve also seen what happens when families, educators, and communities step outside that system and start asking bold questions:
What if school wasn’t about control, but freedom?
What if learning wasn’t standardized, but personalized?
What if children didn’t need grades to stay motivated—just purpose?
These aren’t just thought experiments. I’ve visited the schools asking these questions—and building answers. I’ve seen 7-year-olds set their own goals for the week. I’ve watched teens pitch business ideas, run town halls, and mentor younger learners with patience and pride. I’ve seen kids genuinely excited to go to school every day.
And it’s not a fantasy—it’s happening in microschools, Acton Academies, and learner-driven environments all over the country.
As a parent, I want this kind of joy and ownership for my son. As a professional, I know what’s possible when we trust kids, equip Guides, and create spaces rooted in responsibility and purpose. And as a community member, I believe Miami Beach is ready for this kind of change.
Founding Acton Academy Miami Beach is my way of living that belief. It’s a learning community, yes—but also a statement: that every child is unique, education is not one-size-fits-all, and every young person is a genius. It’s up to us to build an environment where they can flourish.
This is the beginning of something bigger than me—and I hope you’ll be part of it.
With purpose,
Allison
